Dr Euan Murugasu

Dr Euan Murugasu is a former Head of Department ENT Head & Neck Surgery, Director of Otology, Senior Consultant ENT surgeon at the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH-NUHS). He is a Specialist in Otorhinolaryngology, Otology and Neurotology who has returned to private practice in April 2021.

He completed his medical training on the President’s Scholarship at the National University of Singapore before embarking on postgraduate training in ENT surgery at the National University Hospital.

Dr Murugasu obtained his ENT surgical fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1992. He then completed his PhD in Auditory Physiology & Molecular Biology at the University of Sussex, UK, in 1997 under the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship.

Dr Murugasu has won several prestigious awards, including the Royal Society of Medicine IONOS Registrars Medal and Gold Medal at the 9th British Academic Conference in Otolaryngology held in Manchester, United Kingdom. His inner ear research work was also nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Zurich, Switzerland in 1999.

In the same year, he was appointed Senior Lecturer by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and became a fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, being duly admitted into the Academy’s Roll of Specialists and awarded Certificates of Specialist Registration in Otolaryngology (ENT) by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Singapore Medical Council (SMC).

Under the Ministry of Health Manpower Development Plan (MOH HMDP) Scholarship Dr Murugasu underwent sub-specialty training in otology and neuro-otology at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom under Professor Richard Ramsden. This was followed by clinical attachments at the House Ear Clinic in Los Angeles, the University College of San Francisco, and the California Ear Institute, Stanford University in the United States. He was also trained in the area of cochlear and auditory brainstem implants.

Dr Murugasu’s clinical interests are in otology and neuro-otology (hearing loss and balance disorders), including implantable hearing aids, bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHAs) and cochlear implants (CIs), as well as specialised surgery for balance disorders and tumour surgery e.g. Acoustic Neuromas and Auditory Brainstem Implants (ABI), where the electrodes stimulate the cochlear nucleus directly.

Dr Murugasu is trained in the technique of Endoscopic Ear Surgery or EES. It is a minimally invasive procedure for treating conditions of the ear without any visible cuts or incisions that is increasingly used in the United States, Europe and Japan. Presently, he is a member of the Pan Asian Work Group on EES (PAWGEES) and also the International Working Group on Endoscopic Ear Surgery (IWGEES). He is adjunct faculty at the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hongkong (CUHK) and APOST which trains younger ENT doctors on this EES approach.

In addition, Dr Murugasu is senior clinical lecturer with the Medical Faculty of NUS, and a Clinical Examiner with the DUKE-NUS Graduate Medical School, and the Specialist Accreditation Board for ENT, and on the National Board for Medical Exams (MOH).
